The Story Behind the Name

The farm's unique name comes from a charming piece of history: a large kettle left behind by the previous owner still stands proudly on the property today. When Skip and Jeanne Jackson purchased the original property on Route 96 in Candor in 1969, they probably had no idea they were starting what would become a beloved regional destination.

What began as a modest operation growing strawberries, sweet corn, summer vegetables, and tomatoes has blossomed into something truly special. Those early fall displays featured just 10 to 12 pumpkin characters: a far cry from the elaborate seasonal wonderland visitors enjoy today.

Spring Season: New Beginnings

From April through July, Iron Kettle Farm comes alive with the promise of spring. Their greenhouse operation, which began expanding in the 1980s, now offers more than 50 varieties of annuals, perennials, vegetables, and other plants. For over 30 years, they've hosted spring traditions that bring families together, including the popular opportunity to meet baby goats in May.

The spring season represents everything we love about farm-to-table partnerships. Fresh herbs, vibrant vegetables, and beautiful flowers all start here, eventually finding their way to our catered events throughout the growing season.

Fall Magic: Where Fairy Tales Come to Life

While Iron Kettle Farm shines year-round, their fall season is truly magical. The elaborate pumpkin displays featuring fairy tale and nursery rhyme characters create an enchanting backdrop that's perfect for autumn events. Imagine hosting a corporate retreat or family celebration surrounded by such creativity and seasonal beauty.

The fall offerings include scenic hayrides through the countryside, corn mazes, and even pumpkin slingshot competitions: activities that remind us why local, community-centered venues are so special for events. Their Spook Barn adds a touch of Halloween fun, while the farm's concession stand serves hot chocolate, candy apples, and homemade donuts that could easily inspire seasonal menu items for our own catering services.

Building Community Connections

What makes farms like Iron Kettle so special isn't just their products: it's their commitment to community. Grandma's Barn Gift Shop features fall decorations, country home decor, toys, and local crafts, while their farm store offers fall produce, baked goods, and preserves. This kind of local ecosystem is exactly what we try to support and celebrate through our catering partnerships.

Our Other Local Partners

While we'd love to share detailed stories about each of our farm partners, many prefer to let their products speak for themselves. What we can tell you is that farms like Cornell Orchards, The Cheerful Cherry Farm (specializing in stone fruits: peaches, plums, nectarines, and cherries), Middlefield Farm with its peach orchard, and Side Hill Acres Goat Farm each bring their own unique strengths to our sourcing network.

These partnerships represent the heart of what farm-to-table catering should be: direct relationships with producers who care about quality, sustainability, and community. Whether it's fresh dairy products, seasonal fruits, or specialty vegetables, these local farms help us create menus that truly reflect the best of our region.

The Ithaca Farmers Market: A Hub of Local Flavor

The Ithaca Farmers Market deserves special recognition as one of the premier gathering places for local food in our area. While we can't share all the insider details, any caterer will tell you that farmers markets are treasure troves of inspiration and ingredients.

Markets like this one serve as vital connections between producers and food professionals like us. They're where we discover new seasonal ingredients, build relationships with growers, and stay connected to the pulse of what's fresh and available. The variety, quality, and passion of vendors at farmers markets continuously inspire our seasonal menu development.

From artisanal cheeses to just-picked vegetables, these markets showcase the incredible bounty available when you choose to work with local sources.

Why Local Sourcing Matters for Your Events

When you choose Micromony Catering, you're not just getting delicious food: you're supporting an entire network of local producers and small businesses. This commitment to local sourcing offers numerous benefits for your events:

Freshness You Can Taste: Ingredients sourced locally are typically harvested at peak ripeness and reach your event within days, not weeks. This means better flavor, better nutrition, and better presentation.

Seasonal Menu Options: Working with local farms means our menus change with the seasons, offering guests the best of what's currently growing in our region. Spring asparagus, summer tomatoes, fall squash, and winter root vegetables all taste better when they're in season locally.

Unique Story Elements: Every local farm has a story, and those stories add depth to your event. Whether it's the heritage apples from a century-old orchard or the artisanal cheese from a family dairy, local ingredients give your menu a sense of place and purpose.

Environmental Responsibility: Shorter transportation distances mean lower carbon footprints, while supporting local agriculture helps preserve farmland and rural communities.

Economic Impact: Every dollar spent on local ingredients supports local families, creates local jobs, and strengthens our regional food system.

Planning Your Farm-to-Table Event
